By Mayuko & Maria  The Annapurrna mountain ranges 今朝、出発する前にずっと見えなかったアンナプルナ山脈を見る事が出来ました！みんなは山が見えるように祈っていたので、最後に見れてとても感動しました。
This morning before we left for Kathmandu we were able to see the beautiful Annapurna mountain ranges! Everyone was moved because we had been praying to see them before we left. Yay!
Some of the scenery on the way  Banana wala  Small vegetable market  The cows like to feed nearby...conveniently :)  The windy mountain road.  Parts of the road washed away....and the river came through  Repair store  Someone knows how to sleep anyway :D  At a rest stop on the way 帰り道も暑く、ホコリが多かったけど、無事に帰れました。帰ってきてすぐにリリーさんのおうちに行ってメグのお友達やジェームズさんのお友達と会って夕食を一緒に食べました。Ukus mukus になるまでごちそうになりました。ネパール語ももう少ししゃべれるようになりました。わーい！
The ride was hot and dusty and over 7 hours, but we made it! When we got home we went straight way to Lily’s house to have dinner and some fellowship with her Nepali friends. We learned more Nepali too. We were all ukus mukus by the time we went back. Guess what that word means!

彼は近くのホテルのオーナーさんのよう。だけど、今日はリラックスする一日だと^^ Almost every house has got one of these water tanks on its roof. If you use too much water, it'll run out unless you pump more. Good idea for saving water, maybe.
どの家もこういった水のタンクが屋根の上にある。水を使いすぎると、ポンプしないとないよ。節水にはいい考えかも。 Laundry! Red saris in preparation for a day of fasting, and dancing.

By Maria and Mayuko  It's morning glory season here! アサガオがそこら中咲いてる♪  The garden on the top floor of our hotel, hotel "Marigold". 今日はポカラ２日目でちょっと忙しい１日でした。朝はホテルのすぐ近くにあったレストランで朝食を食べました。
まゆ子ちゃんはちょっと風邪をひいちゃって一緒に来れなくってとても寂しかったです！
Today was our second day in Pokhara and it was quite a busy day. We ate breakfast at a restaurant near the hotel and below are some pics :)
Sadly Mayuko had to rest because of a slight cold and we missed her a lot!
 Nepali style continental breakfast 朝食を食べた後に楽しみにしていた馬乗りをしました。みんな初めて体験！馬に乗り町中を回っていろいろな観光をして、とても楽しかったです。思い出に残った事は思った以上に日焼けをしたりお尻が痛くなったりしたことでした。(笑) ^^
After we ate our breakfast we went horse riding which we had been looking forward to doing. It was all of our first times! We rode all around town and went to different tourist sights and enjoyed ourselves a lot. One of the things that will probably be the most memorable is the sunburns that we got and the aching of our butts. lol ^^

ネパールでは今日から始まる２日間にわたるお祭りがあります。女性が男性（旦那さん）に捧げる２日間のようです。夕方、ご飯を食べに行ったレストランではダンスなどをしていた団体がいて真一さんと枝美がその団体に混じって一緒に踊りました。写真を見てのとおり、盛り上がってるようです。
Today was the first day of the two day religious festival here in Nepal. While we were eating dinner, Shinichi and Emi were pulled into a group of people who were celebrating and danced and had a lot of fun with them as you can see in the photo! They really got into it :)
By Meg & Shinichi  We left Kathmandu safely, but what is travel in Nepal without a little adventure. Within 40 minutes, we hit an exceptionally big pothole and heard a loud popping sound. Bursted tire! But, the Nepalis are so good with this type of stuff, and in 10-15 minutes we were on the road again, with a changed tire, and no one even had to get off the bus.
今日は予定通り、朝の６時にカトマンズをバスで出発しました。しかし、スムーズにと思っていてもなかなかそうはいかない！４０分もかからないうちに大きなポットホール（道路の穴）に当たってしまい、大きな音が聞こえました。何かと思ったら、タイヤがハデに破けてしまったのです！ でも、この運転士さんチームには予想外はないようです。１人もバスを降りなくても、すぐにスペアで交換し、１５分以内ではまたポカラへ向かっていました。さすがネパール人！
 The many other tires that were affected by these mountain trails.  There was alot of traffic though, due to other buses and truck tires that met the same fate, and the windy mountain roads being so narrow. So after about 8 hours of squeaky bus brakes, horns honking, banging on the side of the bus, whistle communications, and passing by trucks and buses loaded with people, babies, goats and what have you, we arrived in Pokhara.
バスのブレーキの音、クラックション、バスの横をたたいている音と特別な口笛の合図の音に囲まれながら、人、赤ちゃん、ヤギさんなどなどでぎゅうぎゅう詰めになっているバスやトラックとすれ違った８時間後にポカラに到着！
 バスに乗っているヤギさん達 Hot sweaty bus+bumpy roads made for a pretty hard ride, but getting here it was worth it! Time seems to pass incredibly slow here....
渋滞の為、予定時刻より遅れること約１時間３０分。
熱気のこもるバス＋デコボコ道での８時間は思った以上にハードでした（汗）けど、来る価値があるある！雰囲気がとってもゆったり。時間が止まるよう。。。
 これからボートクルージング？に行ってきま～す

Due to this timing being at the latter end of monsoon, the Annapurna ranges are not quite clear, but it showed its face a tiny bit for us. Thank you!

The answer: fireflies! Beyond the above photo, there was actually a whole BUNCH of fireflies taking over the place. It’s too bad we couldn’t capture it on camera.
メンバー全員、蛍の群れがつくってくれる幻想的な雰囲気に感動！！
We were all completely mesmerized by the hundreds of fireflies glowing all around. It was surreal and unexpected. Course we also had to walk through mini rivers (aka mud) to get there, lol. But we’re glad we chanced upon that place.

This floating raft? is the only way to enter this place. This mans rope work was wonderful. He pulls over 800 kilos back and forth daily.

Today, at 5:45 am, the rumors of a strike happening were confirmed, as elections will be held again in the next couple of days. However, as usual in this country, (when it comes to the political situation) no one really seemed to know exactly what was going on, and its all very nebulous. But just to be on the safe side, we decided to postpone our trip to Pokhara for a day. We ended up having a slower but relaxing day. We left the house past noon but the transportation was running as usual and there were no signs of strike (in this case, strike mainly means no transportation) so we visited Bhaktapur, which is said to be the Cultural Capital of Nepal. On the bus, I have never sat so close to the front wind shield in my life! Haha. I was quite literally about 15 cm away, sitting on a sideways seat squished next to many other friendly Nepalis and cute children. I'm just glad the road was exceptionally smooth, and I later found out it was built by the Japanese. Heh. We enjoyed many sights and sounds along the way. Memories to treasure!
数日後に選挙があるため、ストライキがある噂が朝の５：４５分に確認されました。（といっても微妙ではっきりしないことが多いですが。）ストライキというのは、普通の交通機関が使えなくなるということ。朝早くから出発する予定でしたが、正確な情報がなかったため、念のためにポカラへ行くのを１日延期することにしました。でも、昼過ぎから外に出てみたら、普通の状態だったので、バクタプールというネパールの文化センターと言われている所へ行きました。バスと徒歩で、いろんな面白い光景とネパールの人々と触れることができました。
（バスのあんなに真ん前に座るのも初めての２人でした、笑。冗談抜きで前の窓から１５センチほどしか話せれない席を頂きました:P）道路が日本の会社がつくったもので感謝！（でこぼこすくなめで、苦笑）
久しぶりにリラックスできる、なんとなくゆっくりできた１日でした。
 ネパールの日常生活でのひとコマ。機械がなくても何とかなりマス！家の外の工事はもう少しで完成しそうです。

ずっとこの街で暮らしているのかな。深い年輪を感じます。
I wonder if they were living here all these years...Can almost feel their sage-like ness. Heh.
Here, the older men all wear the traditional dress of a Labeda Suruwal, complete with the topi (the hat that makes everyone look Nepali....maybe :D)  Here's some kind of board game that I discovered them playing. I couldn't grasp exactly what it is, but it looked like some sort of betting game with little red beans and pebbles as markers. It was so cute!!
どういうゲームがよくわかりませんでしたが、小石と赤い豆をマーカー代わりに使っていたのが可愛かったです。
 美味しそうな匂いがあちこちからしてます。 It smelt good, but not sure how it tastes.  ２人乗りは当たり前！！子どもちゃんもへっちゃら〜 2 people on the motorcycle :) Sights like this or with 3 people on the bike are common here.  ネパールのエリッククラプトン！？カワイイ！！ Nepali Eric Clapton? So cute!  This hairstyle (note the teeny bit of hair in the back) can also be seen regularly.....still need to ask why, as there must be a reason behind it. :D  外がさわがしいゾ！？ Hey, its loud out there!?

Thanks for visiting this blog!
We've been blessed to have only a few power cuts since coming here. Apparently there's more electricity since monsoon just ended. The weather has also been great. It rains and thunders at night, but by morning, its usually mostly dried up.
Tomorrow we'll be heading to Pokhara (if the rumors of strike are only rumors) and will likely have less internet, but we'll post again after we return.

ネパールについてから数回しか停電がないというような、ネパールにしては贅沢をしています。雨期が終わったばかりなので、電気が多いようです。夜はほぼ毎晩大雨と雷ですが、朝になると晴れてくれています。うれしいです。
明日はポカラへバスで向かう予定です。（ストライキがある噂もありますが。。。）あちらではネットにあまりつながらないと思いますので、帰ったらまたこのブログを更新します。

Continuation of previous post by Emi & Cheryl  Thankfully, Mayuko chan knew how to put on a Yukata, so we weren’t completely clueless. We all had a lot of laughs in the process. It was quite fun.
私たちがみんな浴衣の着付けのプロなわけではないのですが、幸いなことに、ここでまゆこちゃんが大活躍。:D. いっぱい笑いながら、楽しいひとときを共有することができました。
 Lily with 2 of her girls  Shinichi & Sundeep (16)  この後、帰る時、タクシーで後ろの席４人ぎゅうぎゅうでした。まゆこ、その後、まりあがバイクの後ろに乗りました。
On the way home, since we all couldn’t fit in the taxi, first Mayuko, then Maria rode on the back of the motorcycle with Lily.
 Maria, thrilled with her first bike ride 初めてのバイク。幸せそうだね♡
By Emi & Cheryl Yesterday night it rained a lot. We heard some really loud thunder........but other than that, it was fine. The morning was as clear as ever. For breakfast, we ate nepalese donuts with the children. It was very good. Usually the children play outside then eat breakfast. After cleaning up and getting ready, we were off to the zoo!!!
昨日の夜は大雨でした。雷の大きい音も聞こえました........でもそれ以外は普通でした。朝は完璧に晴れてました。イエイ！朝食は子供達とネパールドーナッツとチャイ。とてもおいしかったです。土曜日は子供達は普段外で遊んでから朝食するそうです。食べた後、準備して、動物園へ出発！！
 Becoming friends♡ 手つないでる。かわいい。  Maria( 15) and Nisha (13) stuck together almost all day. まりあ（１５歳）とニーシャ（１３歳）は一日中一緒♪ After the usual chaotic traffic, we met up with Lily and the 8 girls she is currently caring for in front of the zoo. The girls are all orphans from Humla, (a region in northwest Nepal) and Lily and those working with her have been sponsoring their housing, food, and educational fees. Now all of them are studying in a school in Kathmandu. We will post later with more details about the projects Lily and James are operating right now.
パンパンにいっぱいになった交通機関を使い、リリーというアメリカ人の女性が数年も世話している女の子達８人と動物園の前で待ち合わせ。この女の子達は全員親がいない子供達で、ネパールの東西の地域にあるフムラという数年前に内戦と飢饉に襲われた町から来た少女たちです。リリーたちは数年間、彼らの生活費と教育費をサポートしてきています。リリーはずっとお母さん代わりになっています。今は近くの学校で楽しく勉強しているようです。リリーとジェームズが現在やっているプロジェクトに関してはのちほど詳しく書かせてもらおうと思っています。皆さんお楽しみに！
The zoo was quite impressive. The animals there were the same as Japan but the animals seemed to have more space to move and live within.
動物園は思ったより大きかったです。動物は日本とほぼ同じですが、動物が動くスペースはもっと広かったような気がしました。
 まゆ子が象とふれあってる！ Mayuko touching the elephant!  スージャンとサディーンがランチを楽しみにしてて上機嫌^^ After that we went to this restaurant and I ate chowmien for the first time!!! Chowmien is nepal’s yakisoba.
昼は近くにあるレストランへ行き、私は今日初めてチャウメンを食べました。チャウメンはネパール＆中国風の焼きそばみたいな料理です。
 After eating to our stomach’s content, we stopped by Lily’s girls place. We helped put on the Yukatas that we brought with us from Japan. (Thank you everyone who donated their Yukatas!!) For most of us, it was trial and error, so we all made a lot of mistakes on the way.
お腹いっぱい食べた後、リリーが世話している子供達が住んでいる家へ行かせてもらいました。そこで、日本から持ってきていた浴衣の着付けをしました。
今日のスケジュールには初めての観光を入れました。古くてきれいなネパールを見に行くのをとても楽しみにしていた。でも、まずはたまってきた洗濯をちゃんとやらないと…
Today is the first sight-seeing day and we were all quite excited about the thought of being able to see the some old temples in Kathmandu.
But before that, we had to have our laundry done!
 洗濯屋さんはネパールに数多いです。だから、すぐに小さな一店舗が見つかり、洗濯物を全部預けてました。しかも今日午後に出来上がるそうです！完璧だ！ Laundry services are popular in Kathmandu so we located one small shop soon in the basement of a dark building which claims to provide on-day delivery. The guy in the counter has a sweet smile and we settled the price easily. ネパールの人々は毎日、手で洗濯をするのが普通なので、川側やら泉のそばやらに、女性が石けんで服を手洗いしているのをよく見かけられる。ジェームスさんの家にも洗濯機が置かれず、４日間に汚い服が山積みになったため、今朝早速洗濯屋さんに向かいました。
日本からの友人が洗濯機の分を贈金して頂いたおかげで、ジェームズさんに新しい洗濯機を購入することができました。
In Nepal, many families do not own a washing machine so the sight of women washing clothes by the riverside or the fountains is common. Our host's home did not have a washing machine either so after two hard-working days and many dirty clothes piling up, we decided to go to a laundry shop in the downtown area first. A kind donor in Japan had also agreed in advance to sponsor a washing machine, so we were able to bring a washing machine to James house.
 Loading the washing machine onto the top of the jeep. トラックはほとんどないのでジープの上に洗濯機を乗せる！  次は『ルーム ツゥ リード』というNGOのオフィスへ向かいました。このNGOの創始者は元マイクロソフトのマネージャーをしていた方です。ネパールの子供たちを助けるために会社をやめネパールに来て、図書館を国中に建てたり、貧しい子ども達の教育のスポンサーを見つけたり、現地言語で子供向けの書物を製作と出版して図書館に提供するという活動をしています。ここでジェームズさんの図書館のために本を頂けないか伺いに行きました。
Next we went headed to "Room to Read"’s office. This NGO was established by a former Microsoft manager, who left his position to start an organization to provide books for educational use in Nepal, build libraries, and sponsor children educational fees. We went there to see if they could sponsor some books for James library.
 The head office here in Nepal ネパールの本部  CUTENESS  きれいな事務員 Beautiful Office Lady  次はちょっと観光タイム！今回向かったのは世界遺産名録に登録された「ハヌマン ドッカ ドルバー 広場」という観光名所である。名前は覚えづらいかもしれないが、実はこの場所は昔から二十世紀の初頭までずっとネパールの宮殿として使われていました。幅広いの敷地にインド教と仏教との寺が点在しています。
Now the sightseeing! The place we went is a World Heritage Site called Hanuman-dhoka Durbar Square. What a long name! It is a square surrounded by temples and shrines of various kinds, both Hindu and Buddhist, all of which are fully covered with exquisite and complicated carvings of buddhas or other images whose names are totally unknown to us. It was one of the palaces inhabited until relatively recently.
 広場の全景 The full view of the Square  彫刻は驚くほど美しい、しかも精細 The engravings on the building are so detailed and beautiful  蛇の像 The statues of snakes....  ネパール人のガイドさんはみんな英語が上手で、彼らとの会話を楽しむことができました。
Nepalese guides all speak good English and we really enjoyed our conversation!
 広場に鳩がいっぱいいました〜 So many doves hanging around the square~~  よくわからない人との写真〜〜修行中の人かな？ A photo taken with a .... monk? Or maybe a Hindu priest...  全員が塔に上って、記念写真♪ We climbed all the way up one of the towers and took a group photo.
The evening activities
 夜になると、ジェームスさんが教育をスポンサーしている子ども達6人が学校から戻ってきました。毎週の週末は彼と一緒に過ごします。彼らは遠い田舎の村から来た子ども達で、ジェームズさんが里親みたいな形で毎日寮に暮らして、学校に行っています。In the evening, the 6 children that James has been sponsoring schooling for arrived for the weekend. They are children from far away villages, and James has been a replacement father for them on the weekends, since its too far for them to go home. Usually they stay at the boarding school.
 家族全員揃て、仲良くして晩ご飯を食べました。
Now that the family has all gathered, we ate dinner Nepali style on the floor.

 ネパールの食べ方で（手で！）おいしいカレーを食べましょう！
Let’s enjoy Nepalese food in a Nepalese way, i.e., by hand and by hand alone!

After the dinner, we enjoyed a good time teaching each other our own native language and it was so much fun!

私、今日ちょうと体調が悪かったので、一日中休みました。
I wasn't feeling very well this morning, so I rested for most of the day.
夕方には、だいぶ良くなっていたので、子供たちと遊ぶことができました。
I got better around the evening, so I was able to participate with the evening activities.
最初は「魂のためのチキンスープ」という本から２話ぐらい読みました。子供たちはネパールに川がいくつあるか正確にしっていたのでビックリしました。。逆に、日本から来た人で、日本の川の数。。。知っている人はいなかったかな。恥ずかしかったです、汗）
First we read 2 stories from the book we brought along, "Chicken Soup for the Soul". We were all surprised when the children knew the exact numbers of the rivers in Nepal. In turn, no one from Japan knew how many rivers were in our own country. It was quite embarrassing………
 この後、日本から持ってきたお菓子を食べました。ネパールでは、わかめを食べないので、最初はせんべいについていたわかめをとろうとしていました。可愛い♪ お菓子を気に入ってもらえたようです。
After this, we ate some of the snacks we brought from Japan. In Nepal, they don’t really eat seaweed, so at first, they were trying to separate the nori (dried seaweed) from the rice crackers. Of course we told them later, that it was meant to be eaten together. So cute! They seemed to like the snacks alot.
 Shinichi and his new "younger brother":P  菓子を食べた後、UNOと一、九、三というゲームを遊びました。本当に楽しかったです。皆でたくさん笑えました。
明日はみんなで動物園へGO!
After we ate the snacks. We played UNO and Slap. Everybody was laughing and having a fun time. It was a lot of fun. This is all for today. We will be going on an excursion to the zoo with all the children tomorrow.

こんなふうにバスの屋根の上に乗る人もいます。私たちもやってみたかったけどメグに危ないからダメだと言われました。残念。
There are people who ride on top of the bus as well. We wanted to try, but Meg said it was too dangerous, so we couldn’t. Too bad!
We ride this van (which is like a cross between a bus and a taxi ) every morning to get to get into town. Because monsoon has just finished, the roads were full of holes so the ride is always bumpy and exciting.

By Maria and Mayuko 今日も図書館に行きました。昨日、やすりをかけた鉄の策や木の表面にペンキを塗って仕上げました。この2日間のボランティア活動はすごく短かったけどとっても達成感を感じました。子ども達ともたくさんふれあえてとても楽しかったです。詳しくは写真をご覧ください：）
Today was another exciting day at the library! We painted the wooden surfaces and metal bars that we sanded & painted primer on the day before. Even though 2 days is a short amount of time, we were able to have alot of fun getting to know the children better, and completing this part of the project also gave us a sense of accomplishment. Emi is completing her third painting! The kids were constantly at Emi’s side and helping out in any way they could. So sweet.

THE SCHOOL この学校＆図書館はチャルナケルという村にあります。都内からバスで約１時間かかります。This school is located in a town called Chalnakhel, about an hour by bus from the center of Kathmandu. 生徒さんが描いた学校の風景

５年生の教室 生徒は１８人です
The 5th graders classroom. They have 18 students.
この学校は設立されてから１７年経っていますが、政府からの資金が足りないため、未完成の場所がまだ多く残っています。学校は全校で１４０人以上います。（ナーサリーから８年生まで）
校長先生と先生と話したMegは先生の献身さに刺激を受けたと言っていました。
月給は１万２千円ほどで、この学校の運営を続けるために、先生達も個人でお金を出しているそうです。この先生（写真の右の方）は学校が終わってからすぐ、また大学へ行き、教育法についてさらに勉強していると。
It’s been 17 years since this school was in operation, however, due to lack of funds from the government, there are still many areas that remain incomplete. There are over 140 students in this school, ranging from nursery to 8th grade. (15 or 16 years old)
Meg talked with the principal and teachers and said that she was moved by the teachers dedication towards running the school and giving the children a better education.
The teachers salary is roughly 12,000 yen a month, and the teachers also contribute personal funds towards keeping the school going. This teacher (on the right) attends college right after he finishes teaching, to study more about education planning and coordination.
FUNNY STORY 学校の近所のお父さんが真一を呼びつけ、梨を私たちにプレゼントしたいということで、いきなりこの木を上り始めました。どうなるかと思ったら、届く梨は投げてくれ、あとは木を揺らして、落としました。
A father from a neighboring house called Shinichi over, and said he wanted to give something to him and his friends. Then he promptly began to climb this tree and throw down the fruit he could reach, and shook the tree to drop the rest.
投げてもらってもとれなかった結果、こんな悲しい目にあった梨もありました、笑。
Here’s the sad fate of what happened to some of the fruit we didn’t manage to catch. Ha!
